Communications and structured cabling


With the continued expansion and growth, a well-planned structured cabling infrastructure is critical for both present and future success. The fundamental concerns that structured cabling solutions must address are reliability, manageability, scalability and flexibility. A well-planned structured network cabling infrastructure will typically be utilized for more than 20 years and will have to be operational through several iterations of system equipment solutions and multiple generations of protocol data-rate increases.

Reliability: Network cabling infrastructure must provide security and enable 24 x 365 x 7 uptime. Tier 4 data centers have uptime requirements of 99.995 percent, less than one-half hour per year.

Scalability: Structured data cabling infrastructures must support data center growth, both in addition of system electronics and increasing data rates to accommodate the need for more bandwidth. The infrastructure must be able to support existing serial duplex transmission and provide a clear migration path to future parallel optic transmission. In general, the infrastructure should be designed to meet the challenges of the data center over a 15- to 20-year service life.

Flexibility: With the constant in data centers being change, the data cabling infrastructure must be modular to accommodate changing requirements and easy to manage and adjust for minimal downtime during moves, adds and changes.

The solution

Cat 6 is the standard for Gigabit Ethernet. The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet) up to a distance of 100 meters. Category 6 cable has a reduced maximum length of 55 meters when used for 10GBASE-T Category 6a.

The latest standard from the TIA for enhanced performance standards for twisted pair cable systems was defined in February 2008 in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10. Category 6a (or Augmented Category 6) is defined at frequencies up to 500 MHz with a distance of 100 meters - twice that of Cat 6.

Fibre - The Need for Speed

Current data rates are not able to meet the needs of the future with the rising demand to support high-bandwidth applications. With Ethernet applications now operating at 1 and 10G, it is clear that to support future networking requirements, 40/100G technologies and standards are required.

The requirement for higher data rates is being driven by many factors. Switching and routing, virtualization, convergence and high-performance computing environments are examples of where these higher network speeds will be required within the data center environment. Additionally, Internet exchanges and service provider peering points and high-bandwidth applications such as video on demand will drive the need for a migration from 10G to 40/100G interfaces.
